Graham Scobey bio picture

Welcome to my Blog!

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with the art of photography: the ability to stop time, to capture a single moment, and then to carry that moment with us for the rest of our lives.  It is this fascination that led me to a career doing just that.

I strive to bring a unique perspective to every subject I shoot, assuring that my clients’ moments are captured in a fresh, innovative style.  My goal is to not only photograph my subjects, but to encapsulate the very spirit of their momentous day.

Your moments are precious.  Capture them for a lifetime.

-Graham Scobey

Maren: Three Weeks

Three weeks ago, Jeff and Kirstie brought home the latest addition to their family.  Yesterday I got to meet this gorgeous little girl and photograph her over-the-top-cuteness.  This gal brightens whatever room she’s in.

Jim and Jaime: The Red Barn Wedding

It’s time to break my vow of blog silence…  I’ll admit it: last year I was not a diligent blogger.  It was, however, a very awesome year.  After shooting over 30 weddings my head was spinning, and I got so far behind on the blog that I just gave up.

This year, however, I am determined to do better.  Ashley and I have been making our goals for the year, and we have some very exciting things going on (more on that in a future post).  But for now, it’s time to catch up on some highlights from last year:

In September, I joined forces with Katie Slater to shoot her clients, Jim and Jaime, and their beautiful wedding at The Red Barn in Amherst, MA.  Jim and Jaime are both wonderful people, and we had an awesome time documenting their wedding.  Here are some of my favorite images I was able to capture that day:

Guy and Melissa: Engagement Shoot

Earlier this week, I met up with Guy and Melissa at UConn for their engagement session.  I met these two around this time last year when they were dating.  Ashley and Guy are in the same grad program at UConn, and when we met I knew immediately from their homestar runner inspired sense of humor that we would get along very well!

Guy proposed to Melissa earlier this year, and I was thrilled when they asked me to shoot their engagement photos.  We started here, in the quad where they met as undergrads.

As we walked around campus, Guy told me how he picked out the ring and how he proposed.  Melissa couldn’t help but smile listening to him tell the story.

When we came across this tree, Melissa jokingly asked if I was going to make them climb it.

And I was like, “Actually, I like that idea!”

After we had walked around campus for a while, we made our way up to Horse Barn Hill. I love this one. Don’t they look like they are standing on top of the world?!

I had no idea what kind of views there were from up there!

Matt and Hien: Villa Capri

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of photographing Matt and Hien’s wedding.  A big thank you to Jim Altieri for shooting with me! These two really make an amazing couple.  You can really tell just how much they love each other.  It was such an honor for me to get to share in their special day!

Before the ceremony, I dropped by Hien’s parents’ house where Hien and her girls were getting ready:

Hien had a team of people helping her get ready.  While her maid of honor was zipping up her dress, another one of her bridesmaids was reapplying her lip gloss.

Then it was on to the ceremony.  I met up with Jim at the church and we went to work snagging some details.  I love his shot of Hien’s bouquet on the bottom right:

Jen and Jon: Old Lyme

Last weekend, my partner in crime (Ashley) and I rolled on down to Wallingford to photograph Jen and Jon’s big day.  The forecast said that the chance of rain was 100%, so we geared up for a rainy day.  Turns out we didn’t need to.  The rain held off and the clouds provided the perfect light for the entire day, like a giant softbox in the sky!

Jen got ready at her parents house.  Before she put her dress on, we snagged some details.  Jen’s Dress was absolutely stunning!

While I worked the dress, Ashley grabbed some details of the shoes and the bouquet.

Jen’s bridesmaids did a fantastic job arranging the flowers.  Ashley grabbed this shot, too.

After the ceremony, we all headed down to the reception at Jon’s Parents’ place on the beach in Old Lyme.  To accommodate their guests, they set up a huge tent next to their house.

Ashley and I arrived a little bit before the bridal party, so we got to work capturing the details.

When Jen and Jon arrived, it started to rain a little bit, but these two were troopers!  I guess that umbrella did come in handy after all!  This is definitely one of my favorites from the day:

The rain didn’t last long, though, so we got the whole bridal party out for some fun.  Ashley took the girls:

Sophia: Three Weeks

I’m finishing up a nostalgic visit to LA, and realizing that this place hasn’t changed much in the year and a half since we moved away: people I love, traffic I hate, ridiculously beautiful weather, ridiculously beautiful people, and a taste of every culture imaginable.  It has been great to reconnect with a few people I haven’t seen in a while, but sadly I haven’t had enough time to see even half of the people I wanted to.  I have gotten to see the little gal I was most excited to see, though.  Sophia is my niece, and she invited me out to hang out with her and her parents and take her first round of head-shots (she’s getting an early start on her acting career… it is LA after all).  So, without further ado, I present to you the beautiful Sophia:

Sophia 1

She loves sticking her tongue out at her uncle:

Sophia 2

Sophi’s parents, Lauren and Josh, are head over heels in love with this girl.

Sophi – It was so great to get to meet you.  Know that you are loved by people all over the globe.  You have some of the best parents on the planet, and you are going to have so much fun with them.  Come visit us soon!

Love,

Your crazy uncle Graham

Tom and Amy: The Boathouse

Man, it’s been a busy summer.  I am so far behind on blogging that I feel like I will never catch up, but you gotta start somewhere, so here it goes:

At the beginning of the summer, I had the pleasure of photographing Amy and Tom’s wedding at the Boathouse in Hartford with the very talented Mr. Erik Maziarz.  It was a beautiful day for their beautiful wedding.

Jenn and Rich: A Villa Louisa

It felt like it had been raining all summer.  There hadn’t been more than a stretch of a few hours of sunlight in weeks, but by some miracle, Jen and Rich’s wedding day was clear and beautiful.  Ashley and I started at the hotel where the girls were getting ready.  Cassidy and Carly were extremely excited as they prepared for their job as flowergirls.

Ten Eyck Tuesday: June

A lot has been going on lately and I’ve fallen pretty far behind with my blogging, so I am going to make an attempt to catch up starting here.  In June Carla Ten Eyck put together an amazing shoot for her monthly workshop and Katie, Erik, Ashley and I got to jump into the action.  The New Haven Lawn Club was the perfect venue for the shoot.  Tony from Datura provided the gorgeous flowers, Beth Chapman from The White Dress by the Shore provided the perfect dresses and accessories, and Jennie Fresa was on hand to make sure hair and makeup was just right.

Oh, and I can’t forget our models: Mandi, Candice, and Emily.

Bride and Bloom 2

All I can say is “Wow”.  These stunning ladies made our job easy.

Tony was hard at work on some of the most elaborate and stunning floral pieces I have ever seen.  Here’s what I mean:

A shawl made out of orchids?!?!  Come on.  But wait… there’s more!  These pretty much speak for themselves:

Shane and Samar: Oak Hill – Day 2

Samar and Shane’s Saturday ceremony was splendid!  All alliteration aside, Mike and I spent the first part of the day with Shane and his groomsman at the cottage where they were staying.  You could feel the excitement in the air!  As everyone was getting ready, Cyrus rested up so that he would be ready to fulfill his duties as ring bearer (although not quite enough… he fell asleep during the ceremony, too!).

One of my favorite parts of the entire event was the performance during dinner.  Samar’s family is from Pakistan and Shane’s family is from Ireland, so a Pakistani percussionist and an Irish fiddler played together to symbolize the joining of their two cultures.  It was amazing.
